January 2012 - WIP Reborn Baby Dolls

Winter has arrived in New England and there is a biting chill in the air. January is the month to reorganize my work space, order supplies for the new year and learn about new things. I've been teaching myself the art of reborn babies. Working with vinyl is something different for me. I've always worked in porcelain, polymers, fabrics, wood, paperclay etc.....
I like the feel of this material and the effects that can be achieved using many layers of heat set paints. You can see the veining and the skin texture on the vinyl of this newborn doll's leg above. I used a light blue and a warm red paint to achieve this then I stippled a flesh tone over it and then back to the blue veins and warm red. I did this several times heat setting the paint between layers. I'll be working on the limbs today then on to this baby's sweet face. I'll keep you up to date on my progress. The doll parts that I'm using are Kelzie by Cheryl Webber.
Enjoy your day!
Hugs, Morena

  1. The skin effect you have achieved, Morena, looks soft and warm to the touch. How I wish I could get polymer to accept paint like this...sigh...I wish you well, my friend, in your exciting new endeavor and applaud your efforts thus far!! love, Rose

  2. Hello Rose, so nice to see you! It is taking much time researching newborn skin, veins, hair, anatomy etc.. I love the depth this layering gives the baby skin. Very realistic! I hope to try this on my polymer babies. I will have to use a different way of layering since polymer does not absorb paint in the same way as vinyl. I'm trying to figure that out as I work with these babies.
There is always so much to learn and explore. So little time. The journey is such fun!
    Much love Rose, Morena
